Over time, most of us start to notice our skin becoming laxer, particularly around the jawline and under the chin. This skin laxity can cause jowling, a double chin, or even the dreaded “turkey gobbler” appearance. If you have noticed this level of neck laxity, you may be a good candidate for a neck lift, either in replacement of or in addition to a facelift. At DFW Plastic Surgery in Fort Worth, TX, we proudly provide customized neck lifts designed to rejuvenate your appearance and restore a youthful look.

The Benefits of Getting a Neck Lift

The neck lift (platysmaplasty) involves tightening the muscles in your central neck and carefully removing any excess skin and tissue. This procedure can yield several aesthetic benefits, including:

  • A refined facial contour.
  • A reduction in excess skin.
  • Greater definition for the jawline and chin.
  • Diminished appearance of platysmal bands.
  • Reduction of the double chin or turkey gobbler appearance.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?

You are typically a good candidate for neck lift surgery if you are experiencing sagging skin, excess fat, or muscle banding in the neck area, which may result from aging, weight loss, or genetic factors. It’s important to be in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the outcome, and be a non-smoker or willing to quit smoking before the procedure. During your consultation with Dr. Ducic, he will assess your concerns, discuss your desired results, and develop a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve a rejuvenated, more youthful appearance.

A Neck Lift is Great For You:

  • If you struggle with moderate to severe skin laxity around the neck or jawline.
  • If you’re in good overall health, with no underlying conditions that would impede healing.
  • If you’ve consulted a surgeon and have realistic expectations about the procedure.

What is the Best Age for a Neck Lift?

The best age for a neck lift varies for each individual, depending on genetics, lifestyle, and skin elasticity. Generally, the procedure may be best suited in your 40s to early 60s when signs of aging become more noticeable.

Taking the First Steps

Your neck lift journey begins in a private and relaxed consultation area, where Dr. Ducic can discuss your medical history and ask about your aesthetic goals. He will provide a personalized treatment plan to your objectives while also answering any questions you might have about surgery, anesthesia, or recovery.

Dr. Ducic will also provide any specific steps you need to take to prepare for surgery, such as abstaining from certain medications or supplements that could interfere with the healing process.

The Neck Lift Procedure Process Explained

On the day of your neck lift procedure, our patient care team will welcome you and provide an opportunity to discuss any last-minute questions with Dr. Ducic. To ensure your comfort during the surgery, anesthesia will be administered. Dr. Ducic will create small incisions to remove excess fat and tissue, tighten your neck muscles, and achieve the desired aesthetic outcome by pulling the excess skin along the hairline.

Your incision placement depends on your skin laxity levels. Ideally, it’s made in the hair behind your ear, concealing the scar and slightly raising your hairline. You’ll have loose skin lifted, excess removed, and underlying tissues tightened. Fatty deposits might be removed from your chin and neck area, with small sutures closing the incisions. For significant skin laxity, a neck hairline incision could be necessary. Achieving natural results relies on sufficient skin looseness, and the procedure’s timing is determined by skin laxity rather than age.

Neck Lift Recovery and Aftercare

Following your surgery, bandages are applied and removed within a few days. You’ll experience moderate discomfort managed with oral medications. Your sutures are taken out within 5-10 days, possibly in stages, to minimize scarring, which fades quickly. Expect swelling and discoloration to decrease within two weeks. You’ll feel tightness in your neck for several weeks and may notice slight changes in your hair pattern around the incision. Avoid sun exposure for several weeks after surgery. As healing is gradual, you likely won’t see the final results for up to 6 months.

Other Considerations

Should I Also Get a Facelift?

Depending on your aesthetic goals, pairing a facelift with a neck lift might be the ideal treatment plan. Dr. Ducic will provide a personalized answer during your consultation.

Neck Lift or Facial Transfer: Which is Right for Me?

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is another popular procedure that has proven effective at enhancing the results of a face or neck lift and restoring volume to specific facial areas. Dr. Ducic can provide more information during your consultation.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Your neck lift can be long-lasting if you maintain a healthy lifestyle and carefully adhere to post-op guidelines. The results can be maintained or touched up with dermal fillers or BOTOX®, as needed.
