By their very nature, injuries to the face can be emotionally and physically devastating. Restoration of the facial features is often critical to regain your sense of self. At DFW Plastic Surgery, we provide a proven track record of reconstructive excellence, combining the art and science of plastic surgery to help our patients regain full form and function. Dr. Ducic meets and exceeds modern standards, being trained, skilled, and uniquely qualified to manage and treat facial trauma. In addition to reconstructive care at DFW Plastic Surgery in Fort Worth, TX, Dr. Ducic offers emergency room coverage for facial trauma at various local hospitals.

Types of Facial Trauma

Facial Lacerations

Traumatic accidents can often lead to deep lacerations, including cuts all along the face. These lacerations can destroy skin and soft tissue, and sometimes leave significant scarring. Soft tissue lacerations are often repaired through suturing. In addition to the obvious concern of providing a repair that yields the best cosmetic result possible, Dr. Ducic also inspects for and treats injuries to structures such as facial nerves, salivary glands, and salivary ducts (or outflow channels).

Fractured Facial Bones

Another possible outcome of facial trauma is fractured bones. Unlike a broken arm or leg, broken facial bones cannot simply be placed into a case. As such, Dr. Ducic must take additional measures to bring stability. This might involve the use of wires, screws, or small plates.

Fractured Jaw (Upper and Lower Jaw)

Facial trauma may also result in a fractured jawbone. Whether it is the upper or lower jaw, Dr. Ducic can restore full form and function, working in tandem with an orthodontist or general dentist to ensure that the jaw and teeth are all fully rehabilitated. Dr. Ducic often employs a rigid fixation technique to avoid having the jaws wired shut together. This method may improve recovery and allow the return to normal function more quickly.

What Should I Expect in Terms of Recovery?

The recovery timeline can vary greatly depending on the type of injury and the nature of the reconstructive surgery. You should anticipate being home from school or work for at least a week, and abstain from vigorous exercise for at least a month. While swelling, bruising, and discomfort can all be expected during recovery, these symptoms are easy to manage with prescribed medications. Full aftercare guidelines will be provided at the time of discharge.
