Also known as a nose job, a rhinoplasty can enhance the nose to achieve better harmony with a person's face. It may also be performed in order to reconstruct the nose after an injury or to correct the nasal passages that often cause breathing problems.

Good Candidates

The best candidates for a rhinoplasty are those who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the procedure. Patients should not undergo a nose job until their nose has completely grown and they must be at least sixteen years old.

A rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The technique used for a rhinoplasty depends on what aspects of the nose that need to be corrected.

Open Rhinoplasty - This method involves making an incision on the columella between the nostrils. After additional incisions are made inside the nose, the skin, cartilage, and bone can be reshaped and sculpted.

•Better visualization for the surgeon
•Less distortion for nasal framework
•Ideal for complex nasal deformities

Closed Rhinoplasty - During a closed rhinoplasty the incisions are made inside the nose, which eliminates the risk of developing any visible scars. This technique also increases the chances of better symmetry between the nostrils.

•Shorter operative time
•Less swelling
•No external scars

Once the rhinoplasty procedure is finished, patients may experience a slight headache and swelling in their nose. With the help of prescription medication, these symptoms should go away after a few days and patients can usually return to work about a week after surgery. Any strenuous exercise or activity should be avoided for the first few weeks following surgery.

Insurance may cover a rhinoplasty procedure if it is carried out for reconstructive or medical reasons.

Your New Look

In general, patients are very pleased with the results of their rhinoplasty procedure. Individuals tend to be more confident about their physical appearance when their nose is in better proportion to the rest of their face.
