Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is a procedure designed to reshape and reduce the size of the ears to achieve a more balanced appearance. Many individuals with oversized or oddly shaped ears may feel self-conscious, but fortunately, otoplasty can provide aesthetic improvements by repositioning them closer to the head. At DFW Plastic Surgery in Fort Worth, TX, we are delighted to offer this transformative procedure to our patients, helping them gain confidence and enhance their overall appearance.

Why People Get Otoplasty

It is important to know that otoplasty is a purely cosmetic procedure, designed to address issues with your ears’ appearance. Otoplasty does not affect hearing and is not intended to improve auditory concerns. Those who seek otoplasty do so for any number of reasons:

  • To reduce the size of the ears.
  • To bring the ears into greater proportion with other facial features.
  • To correct ears that “stick out” too much.
  • To address cosmetic issues caused by trauma or present from birth.

The Procedure Process Explained

Your otoplasty procedure will be personalized to align with your aesthetic goals. Here is what you can expect from the process.

The Consultation

Your journey will begin with a consultation, allowing you to sit down for a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Ducic. During your consultation, Dr. Ducic will review your medical history, listen to your aesthetic goals, and discuss different treatment options to help you achieve them.

What Should I Do in Preparation?

During your consultation, Dr. Ducic may provide guidelines to help you prepare for surgery, such as abstaining from certain medications or supplements that may impair your healing.

What is Surgery Like?

When you arrive for your ear surgery, you will be greeted by members of our patient care team, then led back to the treatment area. Dr. Ducic may perform your otoplasty with either twilight sedation or general anesthesia, both promoting comfort throughout the procedure. He will make an incision inside the fold of your ear, then reposition the cartilage to place the ear in a more desirable position. Sutures are then used to keep the ear in its new position throughout the healing process.

What Should I Expect in Terms of Recovery?

For the first week of your recovery, you will need to wear dressings on your ears and avoid sleeping on your side. Once the dressings are removed, you will be cleared to resume work and your other normal activities. While some swelling and discomfort can be expected during your recovery, these symptoms are easy to manage with prescribed medications.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Otoplasty results are generally long-lasting, often providing a lifetime of improved ear appearance. Once the ears have healed and settled into their new shape and position, the changes made during the surgery are typically permanent. However, following Dr. Ducic’s post-operative care instructions is important to promote optimal healing and maintain the desired outcome.
