Hair Transplants

Hair loss can be a very miserable and embarrassing experience that any man or woman can go through. Many factors, such as aging, genetics, and traumatic experiences, can contribute to hair loss. Fortunately, our Dallas-Fort Worth plastic surgery practice offers many different ways for individuals to restore a fuller appearance to their hair.

Good Candidates

The best candidates for hair replacement surgery are those who are in good overall health and have a realistic outcome about the procedure. Good candidates should also have full hair growth on some portion of their head that can be used as a donor site.

Hair replacement surgery is done on an outpatient basis using local or sedation anesthesia. The amount of time associated with the procedure will depend on how many areas require transplanting. Depending on how dramatic of an improvement that the patient needs will determine what type of technique that is used.

Grafting - This includes a number of different techniques, including: punch grafts, mini grafts, slit grafts, and strip grafts. Small areas of hair are taken from a region of the hair that is fuller and then applied to areas that have started thinning or balding.

Tissue Expansion - During this method, a balloon-like device is inserted under the scalp where a healthy region of hair exists. After the balloon is gradually filled with saline over a couple of months, the expanded skin is placed over the bald spot.

Flap - Small strips of hair are taken from a healthy donor site and divided into smaller grafts which are placed over bald spots.

Scalp Reduction - This method is often used to treat a large area of baldness. The bald section is removed and the skin containing healthy hair is pulled over and stitched closed.

Some discomfort and tightness on the head may be apparent after the hair replacement procedure is completed, but prescription medication can alleviate these symptoms. A few weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair may begin to fall out. This is normal as new hair growth will occur and continue to grow over the following months.

Your New Look

Although hair growth can be slow, it is effective. Many patients are often very satisfied with the outcome of their hair replacement procedure. Touch up treatments may be needed at some point later on in life, but results are typically long-lasting.
