The rejuvenation of the female genital region to correct the effects of age and childbirth has, historically, been all but ignored. The subject of female genital appearance has been a social taboo. Unaware that something can be done to correct this region, women have long accepted that an unattractive genital appearance, or vaginal wall laxity due to childbirth, is simply something that they have to live with. It is a subject that woman have been reluctant, or embarrassed, to bring up with their husbands or their friends. In recent years, however, a greater awareness has emerged in our society over the availability of procedures designed to restore a more youthful appearance and function to the female genital region.
LABIAPLASTY (labial reduction)
Labiaplasty is a procedure that has been available to women for many years. Labiaplasty is a procedure whereby the external or internal (more common) labia are reduced and reshaped to give a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Labiaplasty is performed in young and older women alike. Often a young woman has genetically redundant labial skin. Besides an unattractive appearance, excess labial skin can be a source of discomfort for these women when they exercise or have intercourse. The simple labiaplasty procedure can correct this problem in a simple outpatient procedure. As women get older, or after childbirth, the labial tissue can stretch and become uncomfortable and aesthetically unattractive as well. These women can benefit as well from a labiaplasty procedure. The improvement in self-confidence and self-esteem afforded by this simple procedure has been described by patients as “life-changing”.
The one-hour labiaplasty procedure is performed as an outpatient. Patients are instructed to remain at light activity for two weeks and refrain from intercourse for eight weeks.
VAGINOPLASTY (vaginal tightening)
One of the newest procedures in female rejuvenation surgery that is rapidly gaining in popularity is the vaginoplasty. This procedure is designed to tighten the muscles of the vaginal canal that have become lax due to age and childbirth. This vaginal laxity results in a lack of friction during intercourse, which can affect sexual gratification for both the man and the woman.
The surgeons at the American Institute for Plastic Surgery will delicately tighten the lax vaginal muscles and supporting tissue of the vaginal canal to more of a pre-pregnancy state. The procedure takes approximately two hours and is performed as an outpatient. Post-operatively, patients maintain light activity for two weeks and are instructed to refrain from sexual intercourse for eight weeks. The vaginoplasty procedure is often performed in conjunction with a labiaplasty.
