Facelift

Over time, the natural loss of collagen, combined with the daily stresses of life, can adversely affect the condition of one's appearance. As a result of these factors, fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin can develop on the face and neck, causing a person to look older than they really are.

A facelift (rhytidectomy) can diminish the signs of aging and restore a person's youthful look by correcting the sagging midface, creases around the mouth, and jowls. Oftentimes, a facelift is performed in conjunction with other plastic surgery procedures such as eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), forehead lift, or chin augmentation, in order to achieve the most beneficial results.

Good Candidates

Ideal candidates for facelift surgery are in those who are in good overall health and do not smoke. Although a facelift procedure often produces dramatic results, realistic expectations should be kept in mind about the outcome of the surgery.

Procedure

A facelift procedure takes two to four hours and is typically performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The technique used during a facelift will depend on the patient's facial structure and what they wish to improve about their face.

Traditional Facelift - This method is the most extensive because it addresses the face, jowls, and neck. Fat is sculpted and lifted as muscle tissue is tightened and the skin is redraped to a more natural contour. An incision is made at the temples which travels around down behind the ear where it is hidden in the hairline.

Mini Facelift - This technique focuses on rejuvenating just the lower part of the face. Incisions are made at the temples and down to the ear, but not behind it. This technique often works best for patients with minimal sagging in the neck.

Scars are not usually evident to the naked eye, since they are hidden inconspicuously in the hairline.

Recovery

After the facelift is complete, the incisions will be bandaged to help ease swelling and prescription medication can be taken to alleviate pain. Most symptoms resolve after a few weeks and patients can usually return to work about a week after surgery.

Your New Look

The results of a facelift procedure are usually very noticeable and long-lasting. Patients not only look more youthful, but also feel better about themselves and often develop a renewed sense of self-confidence.
